Roots & Shoots is a free club for children that focuses on local social service projects showing caring and concern for the environment, animals and the human community.
Each meeting will include project and peace related activities, including art, journaling, music, and connections with real nature.
Each year, our Sunflower Roots & Shoots club holds local celebrations for two global events: Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace Celebration in honor of the UN International Day of Peace in Sept. and an Earth Day celebration in April.
In 2011, we organized our first G.O.! (Get Outside!) event, part of a nationwide initiative led by Children & Nature Network, an organization founded by Richard Louv ("Last Child in the Woods," "The Nature Principle") that encourages and supports people and organizations working nationally and internationally to reconnect children with nature.

Sunflower Roots & Shoots in the News
Sunflower Wins Grant for Roots & Shoots
April 2011: Sunflower was one of only five local nonprofit winners of the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin County's 4th Annual Nonprofits Going Green Contest. Local organizations working to "go green" were honored during the 3rd Annual e4 Sustainability Summit held on April 16, 2011, at the Waterfront and City Commons in West Palm Beach. Sunflower Communications Director, Jaime Greenberg, attended and accepted the award on behalf of Sunflower.
Sunflower received the "Judges Green Harvest Award" and a $1,650 grant, for the environmental and community service work done by Roots & Shoots.
Sunflower wishes to thank the judges, the Community Foundation, and the contest sponsors-- the Environmental Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation, Florida Power & Light and Wachovia, A Wells Fargo Company-- for their generous support of our program!

The Boca Helping Hands/Pearl City Community Garden project was one of two community service projects Roots & Shoots members tackled during 2009-2010. Members also met monthly at Tri County Humane Society in Boca to help the animals.
Roots & Shoots Receives Community Foundation Grant
2009: Sunflower has received a $2,500 Community Foundation Grant from The Marie Graber Martens Fund of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties for development of Sunflower Roots & Shoots.
This funding will make it possible for us to share information and promote the group with brochures and postcards, buy a flip camera for use by our oldest kids, rent Veterans' Park in Delray Beach for our annual Peace Day Celebration in Sept. and Earth Day in April, help us to offer a vegetarian dinner for our meetings at different locations in the community, and much more.
This year we are reaching out to two age groups: 9 and younger (Shooting Stars) and 10-18 years (Re-Cycos). Our older kids will document the year, create and manage a Roots & Shoots and youtube website and develop more advanced community projects for their age group. Spread the word to all your middle school friends who want to make a real difference in their community!
Thanks to and looking forward once again to working with Jim Duquesnel at Gumbo Limbo, Don Campbel at Green Cay and our friends at Milagro. This year we hope to offer other meeting locations in Boca Raton, as well.
